Most position roundups quietly assume you have energy to spend. Someone is holding a plank, someone is squatting on their heels, someone is balancing on one arm. This list assumes the opposite: it's late, or early, or you trained yesterday and everything is sore, and you still want sex without a workout attached.
The selection rule was strict. Almost every position here works lying down, seated, or on your sides; nobody supports their full body weight for more than a moment, and balance never becomes the job. Difficulty tops out at 2 on our 5-point scale, and where a pick does ask slightly more of one partner — Prone Bone's arms, Reverse Rodeo's kneeling ride — the blurb says so plainly, so you can match the position to whoever has energy left.
The positions
Missionary
It keeps the default slot because it asks so little: the receiving partner can stay completely passive, and the partner on top can rest on their forearms instead of holding a plank. Keep the receiving partner's legs flat for the lowest-effort version and save the shoulder variations for a day with more energy. Full entry in the glossary.
Face to face, one partner on top — the most common default, and more variable than it looks.
Cradle
Seated sounds like more work than lying down, but here both partners lean into each other and cancel most of the effort out. Set up on a firm surface — a soft mattress makes the seated partner's base rock more than anyone intends. Full entry in the glossary.
A face-to-face lap straddle on the floor, lower legs tucked alongside the seated partner's thighs.
Lazy Doggy Style
Exactly what the name promises: rear entry without the receiving partner's arms doing any labor. You trade a little depth for it, and a pillow under the hips buys most of that depth back for free. Full entry in the glossary.
Chest-down and low to the bed — an easier-on-the-arms rear-entry variant.
Prone Bone
The most demanding entry on this list, and only for the partner on top, whose single job is keeping their weight forward on their arms rather than on the person underneath. The receiving partner has nothing to do at all — which is the point. Full entry in the glossary.
Full-contact prone rear entry: the receiving partner lies flat with legs together, the other partner stretched out on top.
Lying Reverse Cowgirl
The receiving partner lies back onto the other partner and is carried entirely by them — no kneeling, no crouching, none of what reverse cowgirl usually costs. Getting into position is the only awkward part, so take it in stages and expect grinding rather than thrusting once you're settled. Full entry in the glossary.
The receiving partner lies back face-up on the reclining partner's chest, feet planted outside their legs.
Facing Spooning
Side-lying is the lowest-effort orientation there is, and this is its face-to-face version: the mattress carries both partners completely. Penetration runs shallow at this angle, so treat it as a slow, close position rather than a deep one. Full entry in the glossary.
Side-lying and face-to-face, legs interleaved with the upper leg draped over the partner's hip.
X Position
Nobody can thrust from flat on their back, which makes the X self-limiting: the slow rocking pace is built into the geometry. Budget a minute to get the legs arranged and the hands clasped — it doesn't come together on the first try. Full entry in the glossary.
Both partners lie flat in opposite directions, pelvises joined and legs interleaved, hands clasped over the receiving partner's stomach.
Leapfrog
This is the fix for all-fours arm fatigue: with the chest and forearms down, the receiving partner can hold the position more or less indefinitely. The lowered chest steepens the angle and deepens penetration, so start slower than you would in standard doggy. Full entry in the glossary.
Chest and forearms down rather than fully upright — less arm strain than standard all-fours.
Wrapped Cradle
Once assembled, it may be the least strenuous position here — two people sitting in a mutual hug with their legs woven together. Assembly is the whole cost: sorting the interlaced legs takes patience, and the payoff is small rocking movement, not range. Full entry in the glossary.
Seated face to face, torsos pressed together, each partner's legs draped over the other's thighs.
Reverse Rodeo
The one entry where the receiving partner genuinely does the moving, though kneeling flat keeps it far gentler on the thighs than any crouched ride. Use the hand braced on the other partner's stomach from the start — it steadies your balance and lets the legs work less. Full entry in the glossary.
A kneeling, facing-away ride with one hand braced back on the reclining partner's abdomen.
Kneeling Doggy
It earns its place because nothing here has to be held: both partners kneel at matched height and the frame is stable on its own. If the receiving partner's wrists start complaining, drop to the forearms and you've turned it into Leapfrog without breaking rhythm. Full entry in the glossary.
A stable rear-entry staple: one partner on all fours, the other kneeling upright behind their hips.
Sitting Penetration Scissoring
It looks like the most engineered position on this list, but once the legs are threaded nobody is holding weight — one partner sits, the other lies back, and the interlock does the rest. Thread the legs before anyone's patience runs out; this one rewards an unhurried setup. Full entry in the glossary.
A seated, penetrative scissoring shape — bodies at right angles, legs interleaved at the pelvis.
Before you try these
- Stage pillows first — a firm pillow under hips, head, or chest replaces muscle in nearly every position here, and reaching for one mid-session costs more than it saves.
- Name who's moving — low-effort still means someone rocks or grinds, so agree on whose job that is before settling in and swap when that partner fades.
- Accept the pace ceiling — most of these positions cap out at rocking and grinding by design, and pushing for big range just reintroduces the effort you picked this list to avoid.
