What it actually is

Mutual masturbation is simultaneous self-stimulation in the same space, in view of each other — facing each other, side by side, or however feels comfortable. It's a specific, distinct thing: not one partner touching the other (that's partnered touching or foreplay — see our fingering guide and hand job guide for that version), and not penetrative sex. The technique itself is the same as solo masturbation — our masturbation technique guide covers that in detail — what changes here is doing it together rather than alone.

Why couples do it

It's genuinely lower-pressure than penetrative sex for a lot of people — there's no coordination, no worrying about a partner's experience in the same direct way, just each person's own sensation running in parallel. It's also one of the most direct ways to show a partner what actually works, since watching communicates pressure, pace, and rhythm more precisely than describing it usually does. It's a real option — not a fallback — when one partner is on their period, recovering from something, not in the mood for penetration specifically, or when arousal levels genuinely don't match that day. Some couples use it as its own full activity; others use it as a warm-up that leads into something else.

How to make it feel natural, not performative

This is a real option, not a consolation prize. Plenty of couples keep it in regular rotation long-term, not just as something to fall back on when penetrative sex isn't happening.

Where toys fit in

Each partner using their own toy works well here — a bullet vibrator or similar external toy for a vulva, or a stroker-style toy for a penis, used side by side rather than shared. If you're new to toys generally, our beginner's guide to toys covers material and budget basics before anything else.
