A common assumption is that vaginal lubrication works something like saliva — a dedicated gland producing fluid on demand. It doesn't. The vaginal walls themselves have no lubricating glands at all; the process is almost entirely a byproduct of increased blood flow, plus small contributions from a couple of other sources.

Where the wetness actually comes from

The main mechanism is called transudation. Arousal increases blood flow to the vaginal walls (vasocongestion), and that increased pressure pushes plasma — the fluid component of blood — through the vaginal lining and into the canal. It's a passive filtration process, not glandular secretion. Two smaller contributors add to the mix: the Bartholin's glands, located near the vaginal opening, add a small amount of fluid, mostly noticeable at higher arousal; and cervical mucus contributes as well, with its consistency shifting somewhat across the menstrual cycle.

Timing doesn't always match how turned on someone feels

In laboratory arousal studies, measurable lubrication can begin within seconds to a couple of minutes of physical stimulation or exposure to arousing material — but that physical response doesn't reliably track with how aroused someone reports feeling.
