Ejaculation gets treated as simple and self-explanatory, but a few specific pieces of it are widely misunderstood — especially around pre-ejaculate, what semen is actually made of, and why the recovery window afterward is so unpredictable.

Pre-ejaculate vs. ejaculate

Pre-ejaculate is a clear fluid released from the Cowper's (bulbourethral) glands during arousal, before ejaculation itself. Its main job is lubricating the urethra and neutralizing residual acidity from urine, which helps protect sperm that follow later. It doesn't reliably contain sperm the way ejaculate does — but "doesn't reliably" isn't the same as "never": multiple studies have found viable sperm present in a meaningful share of pre-ejaculate samples, most likely picked up from sperm left over in the urethra from a previous ejaculation rather than produced by the Cowper's glands themselves.

This matters for contraception. Because pre-ejaculate isn't dependably sperm-free, the withdrawal method (pulling out before ejaculation) isn't considered a highly reliable form of contraception on its own, even when timed carefully. What's actually in semen

Semen is mostly fluid from the seminal vesicles and the prostate — the prostate's contribution is covered in more depth in our prostate anatomy guide — which nourish sperm and help them move. Sperm cells themselves make up a small fraction of total volume, not the bulk of it, despite semen being colloquially treated as synonymous with sperm.

What's mechanically happening

Ejaculation happens in two phases. In the emission phase, fluid from the vas deferens, seminal vesicles, and prostate moves into the urethra. In the expulsion phase, rhythmic contractions of the pelvic floor — primarily the bulbospongiosus muscle — physically push that fluid out through the urethra. The refractory period

After ejaculation, there's typically a recovery window before another erection or orgasm is physically possible — the refractory period. Its length varies enormously between people and tends to lengthen with age, ranging anywhere from minutes to considerably longer; there's no single "normal" duration, and a longer refractory period on its own isn't a dysfunction. Some people, particularly younger men, report a much shorter or occasionally negligible refractory period, while others experience one that lasts hours — both ends of that range are within normal variation.
